DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -Â The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped their first road game of the season in a 1-0 loss to the Mercy Mavericks on Sunday afternoon.
The loss comes less than a week after the team lost their home-opener to the Bridgeport Purple Knights in a one-score game, as well.
The Chargers once again trailed early in the game with the lone score of the game stemming from a Mavericks' goal at the 11:52 minute mark. The loss was the first time the Chargers have been shutout this season and first time since a 1-0 loss to Southern Connecticut on Oct. 6, 2021.
The Mavs outshot the Chargers, 13-10 and 7-5 when shooting on goal, however New Haven totaled more corner kicks throughout the game, 6-3.
Five different Chargers recorded a shot on goal with junior midfielder
Dante Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) leading the squad with three total shot attempts and one on goal. Despite the barrage of shots, the Chargers couldn't overcome the stifling Mercy defense to erase the deficit.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet), recorded six saves, four of which were in the second half, while allowing one goal in the loss. The six saves is the most so far this season while falling two saves shy of tying his career-high, which Kastoris set against Franklin Pierce on Oct. 19, 2021.
New Haven, now 0-2, will continue their search for the first win of the new campaign when they return home for another non-conference matchup with the Dominican (N.Y.) Chargers. Kickoff for the game is set for 7:00 PM at Mercy Field on Saturday, Sept. 3.
