WEST HAVEN, CONN. -Â The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped their third straight game to start the year as they fell to the Dominican Chargers, 2-1, at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Saturday Night.
Although the record may not reflect it, New Haven has suffered some tough losses, losing all three games by one goal. As the new look Chargers continue to build chemistry, scoring has been scarce in the opening half. Despite this, the defense has remained stout, allowing only five goals in the new campaign.
The Chargers of Dominican University struck first with a goal on the rebound midway through the first half after New Haven goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) deflected the initial shot. Dominican added an insurance goal only five minutes later at the 26:54 mark.
New Haven came out of the break with urgency as freshman forwardÂ
Guillem Barnils (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Pia Nostrasenyora) cut the deficit to one with a goal 16 minutes into the second half. Coming off the bench and playing only 57 minutes, Barnils led the team with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Dominican outshot the Chargers, 12-9 and 6-3 when shooting on goal, however, New Haven recorded more corner kicks throughout the game, 5-4.Â
Aside from Barnils, junior defenseman
Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College)Â was credited with the only other shot on goal while attempting two total shots.
Vincenzo Lombardo (Vairano Patenora, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Statele Leonardo Da Vinci),Â
Fabio Bastina Andreu (Logrono, Spain/La Laboral),
Thomas Oros (Valparaiso, Ind./Chestertin) and
Derik Meza (West Haven, Conn./West Haven)Â all recorded one shot attempt.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet), recorded three saves, two in each half, while allowing two goals in the loss. The 13 saves rank second amongst NE10 goalkeepers and only one shy from tying for the most. There was a fourth save in the game but instead of the goalkeeper, the save came from freshman defenseman
David Rosen (Vikingstad, Sweden/Degger Gymnasiet) in the closing minutes of the game while New Haven was striving to tie it up.
New Haven, now 0-3, will continue their search for the first win of the season when they host the Nyack Warriors for another non-conference matchup. Kickoff for the game is set for 7:00 PM at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
