THE LEAD
The New Haven field hockey team will conclude its two-game strip to Pennsylvania on Sunday when they visit the No. 2 West Chester Golden Rams for an afternoon matinee at Vonnie Gros Field.
SERIES HISTORY VS WEST CHESTER
New Haven and West Chester meet for the third time in the all-time series, with the Rams holding a perfect 2-0 record in those meetings. The first meeting between the two squads came in 2019 with the Chargers visiting West Chester and the Golden Rams taking a 6-0 decision. Last year with the Golden Rams making their first trip to West Haven, New Haven put on a defensive showcase, limiting the perennial Top-5 team to just one goal in the set back.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (0-2, 0-0 NE10)
The Chargers opened up 2022 with an incredible first game against No. 9 Adelphi, forcing overtime before succumbing to the Panthers, while dropping a 3-0 decision on Friday at Bloomsburg. Against the Panthers, senior Zharria John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) scored two of the three Charger goals with both of her tallies starting as penalty corners. The final Charger goal came from graduate student Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) as she connected with Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) working the goal off an Adelphi turnover. On the opposite end of the field, second year graduate student Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) continued her success from last season, finishing the season opener in Garden City with six saves. Overall, New Haven continues its 2022 season after completing its most successful season in program history, closing out 2021 with a 10-10 overall record and a 9-5 record in NE10 action, earning the programs first ever bid to the NE10 Championship and defeating Bentley in the quarterfinal round.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN RAMS (1-2, 0-0 PSAC)
Ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation in the preseason coaches poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the Golden Rams enter Sunday's battle with an unbeaten, 3-0, record, which includes a pair of wins over NE10 teams; Assumption and Bentley. The most recent outing for West Chester was a Friday afternoon 6-0 win over Mount Olive. Overall for the season, the Golden Rams are outscoring their opponents 21-2, with four different players all racking up a hat trick of goals on the season. Leading all scorers is Valerie van Kuijck who along with a trio of goals has provided five assists for 11 points. Claudia Jaszczak, Paige Wolfe and Jasmine Miller round out the leading goal scorers, all with three apiece. In the cage, sophomore Megan Gula has played all 180 minutes, racking up nine saves.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven field hockey team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with seven of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers will spend nearly the full month of September away from home, playing their first five games on the road before making their home field debut on September 27 against Pace. That home opener is the first of three straight at DellaCamera for the Charger, the last of which is the fifth and final non-conference game against East Stroudsburg. Overall, New Haven will play 13 conference games with the top eight teams following the regular season advancing to the NE10 Championship which will begin on Tuesday, November 15.
IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
Following its best season in school history a year ago, the University of New Haven field hockey team continues to turn heads across the country, securing the first-ever national ranking in program history, T-10th in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Coaches Poll. The Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll is a composite ranking of the top-10 teams in the nation, released weekly, beginning with a preseason poll ahead of week one competition. The Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches and has no bearing on selection to the 2022 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship. CHARGERS SIXTH IN NE10 COACHES POLL
Following its most successful season in program history, the University of New Haven field hockey team has been picked to finish sixth in the 2022 Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Chargers received 105 points, the most they have earned in the preseason poll, keeping them inside of the top-10 for the second straight season. Assumption earned the top billing, scoring 10 of the 14 possible first place points for a total of 165 points. Saint Anselm and Bentley follow to close out the top-three, with Saint Anselm earning the remaining first place votes and 154 points and Bentley third with 140 points.  Rounding out the top-five was Adelphi with 134 points and Pace with 127 points.
