Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ryan Marks

Chargers Fall 1-0 to Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team dropped the first game of conference play this season, a 1-0 loss to the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

While the record might not be attractive on paper, New Haven has had some gritty losses as all of their games have been decided by one goal. The offense continues to search for a spark, not finding paydirt in today's contest despite tallying more shots than the Hawks, 14-12.

The lone goal of the game for Hawks came at the 66:13 mark on a low center shot by Saint Anselm's Andrew Kubinski off a pair of assists from Jackson Bukunt and Jonathan Alves.

Guillem Barnils (Barcelona, Spain/Escola Pia Nostrasenyora) led the Chargers with three total shots, two of which were on goal, while Vincenzo Lombardo (Vairano Patenora, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Statele Leonardo Da Vinci), Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands), Dante Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional) and Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) all tallied two total shots and one shot on goal. The Chargers also recorded more corner kicks than the Hawks, 5-3.

Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) racked up another four saves in the loss, bringing his total on the season to 21. Kastoris's 21 saves and .778 save percentage rank second and tied for seventh among NE10 goalkeepers, respectively.

New Haven, now 0-4-1, return home briefly for a conference matchup with the American International Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:00 P.M. at Kathy Zolad Stadium with Live Stats available via NewHavenChargers.com.
