WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw on Saturday night, avoiding the sting of defeat against the American International Yellow Jackets. In a game that couldn't be decided in 90 minutes, the Chargers tallied a career-high 21 shots, 17 more than their counterpart. The draw is the team's second of the year after first tying with Alliance on Sept. 6th.
New Haven applied the pressure from the start, racking up 11 shots in the first half, three of which were shots on goal. It may not have been a shot on goal but
Tyler Jasinski (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) came very close 13 minutes into the contest when his shot ricocheted off the top of the woodwork. The Chargers nearly hit paydirt once again, not long after halftime, tallying a string of five shots from five different players in the 50th minute.Â
Freshman forward
Fabio Bastina Andreu (Logrono, Spain/La Laboral) led the team with four shots while
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands),
Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium), and
Sean Lane-Turnbull (Wellington, New Zealand/Rongotai College) all recorded three shots and one on goal.
Defense was on full display as New Haven held the opposing squad to a season-low four shots, holding the Yellow Jackets to only one shot in the opening half.
David Rosen (Vikingstad, Sweden/Degger Gymnasiet) made another dazzling play on defense, executing a slide save to out a stop to an AIC fast break in the 19th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) saved the only shot on goal he faced in the match. His 22 saves currently rank six among all goalkeepers in the conference while his .786 save percentage ranks ninth.
New Haven, now 0-4-2, will continue their search for the first win of the season when they hit the road again. The squad will travel to Worcester to take on the Assumption Greyhounds at Ronald J. Abdow. on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 P.M.
