Colchester, Vt. - The University of New Haven women's tennis team opened up its 2022 season in style on Saturday when they posted a 7-0 sweep of Saint Michael's at the SMC Tennis Courts.
A pair of Chargers picked up a pair of points on the day with freshman Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and junior Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington) both picking up wins in doubles and singles. Ferrarini saw her doubles victory come at the No. 1 position where she partnered with fellow rookie Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) for a 6-1 victory. Murphy's doubles win came in the No. 3 position with partner Anna Katz (Miami, Fla./Laurel Springs) as they one in straight sets, 6-0. The final doubles pair was also a straight set victory with Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) pairing up with freshman Madi Mabrito (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas/Samuel V. Champion) for the victory.
In singles play, five of the six singles matches did not allow a point to their Saint Michael's adversary with those five matches coming at second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles. In the lead single position, sophomore Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) earned her only point of the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over her opponent.
Ferrarini's second win of the day came at second singles, while Murphy saw her second point come in sixth singles, both winning in straight sets. Rounding out the singles action was Alyssa Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla./HB Plant) at third singles, Gaaayatri Shankar at fourth singles and Amaya Goulbourne (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) at fifth singles.
The women's tennis team will return to action on Wednesday with a second-straight road match, this time around a non-conference battle with Saint Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill N.Y. First serve is slated for 3:00 p.m.
