THE LEAD
The New Haven women's soccer team returns home for the first of back-to-back home games on Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Pace Setters for a Northeast-10 Conference match. Opening kickoff against the Setters is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
SERIES HISTORY VS PACE
New Haven and Pace have met 18 times prior to Wednesday afternoon with the all-time series knotted at 9-9. The Setters have had the better hand the last few years, winning five-straight against New Haven. Prior to that, the Chargers had won seven of the previous eight meetings, including a stretch of six-straight. The last New Haven win came on October 24, 2015 and ended in a 2-0 shutout.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (2-4-2, 0-3 NE10)
New Haven is looking for its first victory since a September 3 win over STAC, and its first win in conference play after dropping decisions to AIC, Adelphi and Bentley to open league action. Overall for the season, the Chargers have scored five goals from five different goal scorers, with the two most important coming from sophomore Eilish Linnehan and junior Elizabeth Anderson (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) as they each scored a game-winning goal. Among all the goal scorers, Linnehan and Myers have added a third point to their tally, each notching an assist. In goal, graduate transfer goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan has played every minute between the pipes making 30 saves on the season and finishing a pair of games in shutout fashion. McQuillan comes to West Haven from Central Connecticut where she wrapped up her time in New Britain with a 1.09 goals-against-average, eight shutouts and 64 saves last season.
SCOUTING THE SETTERS (4-2-2, 2-1 NE10)
Pace enters Wednesday afternoon's game winner in three of the last four games, including two of those contests in conference action – wins over Saint Anselm and American International. The lone loss in conference play came at the hands of Southern Connecticut. For the season, the Setters are outscoring their opponents 16-11, with those 16 goals coming from seven different players. Leading all scorers is rookie Ava Viebrock who has amassed 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists. Two other players have each scored a trio of goals on the season; Allison Carr and Aryanna Ortiz. In goal, two players have split time between the pipes, with Annabella Cole and Anna Fiore each playing nearly even minutes. Combined, the pair has collected 30 saves, 16 from Cole and 14 from Fiore, who leads the duo with three of the four wins to her credit.
THE SCHEDULE
The New Haven women's soccer team will play an 18-game schedule in 2022 with half of those games to take place at the friendly confines of Kathy Zolad Stadium. The three non-conference tests before league action includes a trip to Holy Family and home games against STAC and Bloomfield. The 2022 NE10 schedule will consist of 12 games, with the top eight teams among the 13 league squads, advancing to the NE10 Championship which is scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 30.
