Schreck and Nixon Combine for Lone Goal in NE10 Opening Win

COLCHESTER, Vt. – In its fifth and final game in a season-opening five-game road trip, the New Haven field hockey team picked up its first win of the season 1-0 over Saint Michael's in both teams Northeast-10 opener.

Graduate student Sophie Schreck (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) broke the scoreless draw in the 21st minute, netting her second goal of the season, which would be the eventual game-winner. Schreck's second goal of the season came courtesy of an assist from sophomore Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) who cross the ball to the corner of the goal where Schreck dove, tipping the ball in to give her team the advantage.

The Chargers offensive threat continued as they kept the ball in Saint Michael's defensive end for a majority of the game, leading the Purple Knights 23-14 to total shots. Of the 23 New Haven shots, 14 of those landed on goal, forcing Saint Michael's keeper Riley O'Connor to make 13 saves.

In addition to her goal, Schreck led New Haven with five, of her seven total, shots on goal, followed by sophomore Kelli Jacobson (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) with three.

The Purple Knights pushed for the last two quarters to find the equalizer but was shut down by the Chargers defensive, led by graduate goalkeeper Kierra Integlia, who tallied seven saves on the day. The Chargers backfield challenged with 11 penalty corners, held strong and left the Purple Knights scoreless on the day.

The Chargers will continue conference play when they make their debut in West haven on Tuesday, September 27 when they welcome the Pace Setters to campus. The home-opener on the Blue and Yellow turf of DellaCamera Stadium is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
