WEST HAVEN, Conn – For the first time of the 2022 season the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team tipped off at Charger Gymnasium hosting the Southern New Hampshire Penmen, the team that they beat in the first round of the NE10 Conference playoffs a year ago. In front of their home crowd the Chargers went to four sets with the Penmen and turned up the drama late in the match.
Series History
Ahead of the 22 match between the two NE10 conference opponents, New Haven has dominated the series leading the all time series 20-1 along with riding a seven match win streak with the Chargers winning twice last year over the Penmen first in the regular season in New Hampshire before ending the Penmen's season in the first round of the conference playoffs at Charger Gymnasium. The Penmen have never won on the road against the Chargers as their lone win came at their home court back in 2014.
The Chargers opened up hot in their first set at home scoring the first four points of the set with a kill from Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) scoring the first point for the Chargers at home. That start was just what the Chargers needed never trailing in the set at one point going on a five point scoring streak late in the set to put the set out of reach of the Penmen with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) closing out the set with a statement kill to take the first set 25-16 and go up 1-0 in the match. In the second set, it was the Penmen and the Chargers splitting the first four points before it was the Penmen's defense slowing down the Chargers offense and taking the second set 25-15. The Chargers finished the second set with 8 kills and two service aces along with a block. Coming out of their first time out of the third set and down five the Chargers rallied to put on a streak of four in a row with two kills from Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and one from Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) along with a service ace from Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) to get within two. However it was the Penmen responding with a streak of their own and closing out the third set capitalizing on Charger errors to take the third set 25-15 and went up 2-1. The Chargers in the third set finished with eight kills, one ace and one block in the set. In the pivotal fourth set, the two teams split the first ten going back and forth being tied at five all. Late in the set down five with everything on the line the Chargers went on a run with Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) serving, cutting the lead to one point with Avery Moore (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community High School) answering the call with a crucial kill. Unfortunately it was the Penmen closing out the set and taking the set 25-20 and winning the match 3-1. Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) led the Chargers with eight kills followed by Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) with seven. Sophia Leon-Tabor (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) added 25 assists Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) added seven blocks at the net.
