NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite senior Madison Blonde (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) continuing her streak of scoring, the New Haven women's soccer team had its attempt at three-straight wins thwarted by crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State 2-1 on Tuesday night.
Blonde scored the lone New Haven goal less than 15 minutes into the game, while holding onto that lead through the halftime break. The Owls would see the equalizer come in the 64th minute and net the game winner less than four minutes later.
The tally by Blonde was her fourth goal in the last three games as she extended her team lead in both goals scored and total points. This time around the senior striker went unassisted to put her team on the board and break the stalemate.
Freshman Riley Drospolous would fire a cross-field pass from midfield nearly 30 yards ahead to the middle where a Southern Connecticut defender looked to punch it out to the side, however Blonde eluded her defender and collected the errant pass only to drill a diagonal shot from 15-yard off the end line, sneaking it just under the crossbar in the opposite corner over the outstretch save attempt by the Owls keeper.
Overall for the game, the Owls did lead the shot battle by a 17-11 margin with Charger keeper Amanda McQuillan (Meath, Ireland/) closing out the night with eight saves, her second highest single game total this season.
Following the short road trip across town, New Haven will return to its home field for back-to-back games, wrapping up a series of four home games over a five-game stretch. Next to visit West Haven will be the Le Moyne Dolphins as the Blue and Gold look for a third-straight win on their home field. Opening kickoff against the Dolphins is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., however prior to the game, the Chargers will honor their six member senior class.
