WEST HAVEN, CONN. -Â The University of New Haven men's soccer team braved the elements at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Tuesday night when they took on Alliance University. While the rain didn't deter the two teams from competing, it may have played a role in the low scoring affair that resulted in a 0-0 draw.
The tie was the first of the season for the Chargers since a rule change eliminated overtime during the regular season. This was also the first time the Chargers have settled for a draw since their 1-1 tie in double overtime against the St. Michael Purple Knights on Oct. 16, 2021.
While the offense was quiet, the defense remained solid, holding Alliance to zero goals on eight shots. The Chargers outshot Alliance, 13-8, although Alliance University had more shots on goal and more corner kicks, 10-5.
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) and
Vincenzo Lombardo (Vairano Patenora, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Statele Leonardo Da Vinci)Â each tallied three shots, while the former also recorded a shot on goal.
Oskar Kvarnback (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium) and
Dante Polletta (Prospect, Conn./Woodland Regional)Â followed close behind them with two shots a piece.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet)Â added another four saves, two in each half, to his total on the season. His 17 saves currently rank first among all goalkeepers in the conference while his .773 save percentage ranks seventh.
New Haven, now 0-3-1, will continue their search for the first win of the season when they travel north to play the Saint Anselm Hawks at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Melucci Field.
