ÂÂÂÂWEST HAVEN, Conn. – After holding the Setters to just four points in the second quarter, New Haven took a lead for good as it went on to win its third-straight 57-50 over the visiting Pace Setters to improve to 9-7 overall and an even 6-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Leading the Chargers on the day was their post play with senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and graduate Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) both finishing with a double double, their ninth and second, respectively. Leading all New Haven scorers was graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who finished with 21 points, her second-straight game with 20+ in the scoring column. She would finish the day shooting 6-of-14 from the field, including four from beyond the arc, while also going 5-of-7 at the free throw line.
"I am proud of the way we fought down the stretch against a good Pace team," said head coach Debbie Buff. "Cam [DeBose] made some huge plays and our two bigs had monster games. One of our goals coming in was to dominate the boards and we did just that (40-22)."
Between Deshaies and Debose it was the senior center that led the way combining 17 points with a game-high 13 rebounds for the double double. Deshaies finished the day shooting 7-of-8 from the field, while adding three points at the line. Lister closed out her day shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field.
Rounding out the New Haven scoring was freshman Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who finished with six points and senior point guard Kamryn King who added three points while leading all players in the game with seven assists, her eighth game this season with five or more.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 47.6 percent (20-of-42), while limiting the Setters to 36 percent (21-of-58). The highlight defensively was the second quarter where the Blue and Gold held Pace to just two field goals in 14 attempts for 14.3 percent while forcing three turnovers and outrebounding the setters 14-6 in that 10 minute stretch.
FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
·       The Setters came out of the gates to score on the opening possessions with Tower Lorde getting the first points of the night. Pace would hold onto that lead the entire quarter, taking a 12-11 lead into the first break.
·       New Haven answered that opening basket with the first lead change of the day with DeBose hitting a three pointer thanks to the first assist from King. DoBose would go on to score the second bucket for the Chargers, also a three pointer thanks to an assist from King.
·       King would then knot the score at seven nearly four minutes later with a 1-of-2 trip to the free throw line, with that free throw the only points for either team for nearly three minutes.
·       Pace broke that stalemate with a three pointer, while New Haven would go on to take its second lead of the game nearly a minute later when Deshaies converted a layup after pulling down the board on the other end.
SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
·       Coming out of the first quarter break it was the Setters that scored first but it was all New Haven from that point.
·       After that initial basket, New Haven would go on an 11-0 run that resulted in an eight point lead just inside the five minute mark.
·       Following the only other bucket for Pace in the quarter that came at the four minute mark, New Haven opened up its first double digit lead with two minutes to play before the half with DeBose getting the bucket.
·       DeBose would strike again with 44 seconds to play, while Hogan drained her first three pointer of the night with four seconds remaining in the half to give New Haven a 31-16 advantage at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
·       New Haven kept the pressure on coming out of the locker room, scoring the first four points of the period before taking the first 20-point lead of the afternoon when Hogan drained her second three pointer.
·       Lister would connect on a layup thanks to a pass from DeBose with 7:01 remaining in the third to once again hit the 20-point lead.
·       The Setters would begin to pick up intensity from that point, going on a 10-0 run that cut the Chargers lead down to 40-30 with 2:51 to play and forcing a New Haven timeout.
·       The bucket from Shanice Sinclair that ended that run was the last of the quarter for the Setters with Deshaies ending the run with a layup and the Setters managing just one-of-two in a trip to the line. The Chargers took a 42-31 advantage into the final break.
FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
·       Pace struck first in the fourth quarter with the first two points of the period coming at the free throw line, cutting the Chargers lead into single digits.
·       New Haven answered with a three pointer from DeBose to regain a 12-point advantage.
·       Pace kept the intensity on, cutting its deficit to seven before Deshaies ended a string of five unanswered from the Setters.
·       The teams would trade buckets over the next two minutes, with another three from DeBose leading to another 10 point lead, this time using an assist from the rookie Hogan.
·       Despite missing a pair at the line, DeBose came up big in the final minute when she blocked an attempt from Sinclair that wouldn't cut the Chargers lead to a pair.
·       New Haven's defense would then force a turnover with 16 seconds remaining and King iced the victory going a perfect 2-of-2 at the line with 14 seconds remaining, providing the final seven point margin.
