Win Streak Continues, DeBose Leads Chargers in Road Win at Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – For the second time this season, the Chargers went wire-to-wire to score a victory over the Adelphi Panthers, completing the home-and-home sweep of the Panthers with a 67-58 win. Leading the Chargers on the night was graduate captain Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who finished with 19 points as she helped extend the Blue and Gold's win streak to a season-best four-straight.

In addition to DeBose, two other Chargers finished in double figure with graduate transfer Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) following her with 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds for her third double double of the season. Rounding out the leading scorers was sophomore Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) who completed her first game in double figures with 10 points.

Among the leading scorers, Lister led the trio connecting on 7-of-8 from the field, while Pendleton followed her going 5-of-8. As a team, New Haven shot a season-high 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the field, the fifth time this season shooting 50% or better. The majority of New Haven's scoring came from inside the arc with just three buckets from long range, while also going 8-of-12 at the free throw line.

Pendleton was the lone Charger not in the starting five to net points, with the remaining scoring coming from the Starting five with Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) adding nine and both Aurora DeShaies and Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) closing out the night with seven. All of Deshaies points came in the fourth quarter as she battled foul trouble throughout the game. DeBose also led New Haven with three blocks, setting a new career-high.

New Haven will put its streak back on the line over the weekend when they travel to Rindge, N.H. to take on the Franklin Pierce Ravens as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Tip off from Franklin Pierce Field House is set for 1:30 p.m.

FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        New Haven came out of the gates going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field before suffering its first miss. The Chargers would score twice before giving up a bucket, taking the early 5-0 lead and then extended the lead into double digits less than four minutes in when DeBose hit her second three pointer of the game.

·        Despite the Chargers extending their lead back to nine on two more occasions, the second with just over three minutes remaining, Adelphi wasn't going to let the game slip away early, cutting its deficit down to as little as two thanks to a 7-0 run.

·        The Panthers would match that two point deficit with 27 seconds remaining but Pendleton would close out the frame in New Haven's favor with her first bucket of the night coming with five seconds remaining thanks to an assist from King. The Pendleton layup provided New Haven a 21-17 lead at the break.

SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        Neither team would get into a groove in the second quarter with a combined right field goals among both teams.

·        Much like the first quarter, the Chargers struck first scoring its first two field goal attempts before allowing a Panther bucket.

·        After Adelphi's first points of the quarter at the 8:33 mark, neither team would score a field goal for nearly four minutes with the only point in that stretch a free throw from Hogan. Adelphi would break that scoring drought at the 4:51 mark on a second chance jumper.

·        Again following that Adelphi bucket the teams would go without a field goal until the 1:18 mark when the two teams each traded two field goals a piece all leading to a 30-27 margin at the halftime intermission.

THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        For the first time on the night, the Panthers would score first in the third quarter, cutting its deficit down to one, however New Haven answered right back with Pendleton matching that bucket just 20 seconds later after starting the period in place of Deshaies.

·        New Haven would grow its lead back to nine, its largest of the period, with 5:20 remaining with Lister and Pendleton combining for all of New Haven first 10 points in the frame and Pendleton on the top end of that with six.

·        Over the next two minutes, Adelphi was able to cut its deficit back to two, scoring seven unanswered in less than 120 seconds.

·        A layup from Lister, thanks to a King assist, with 1:52 on the clock was the last bucket of the period for either team, with New Haven getting one more point on a free throw from Lister as time expired, leading to a 47-42 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS

·        Adelphi opened up the fourth quarter with its first three pointer of the game, cutting New Haven's lead to a pair just 43 seconds into the final period.

·        New Haven answered right back with Deshaies getting back into the action with her first points of the game courtesy of a Lister assist.

·        The Chargers defense also kicked into gear after that opening three, holding the Panthers without another field goal until the 3:29 mark, building their lead back to nine during that scoreless stretch for Adelphi.

·        A pair of field goals from Deshaies, which sandwiched an Adelphi bucket, put New Haven's lead at eight with 1:48 to play, however Adelphi pulled within four with back-to-back field goals, the second of which came with 1:19 to play.

·        New Haven would close out the game at the free throw line, going 4-of-5 at the stripe to secure the victory while defensively holding Adelphi to a pair of missed shots and a turnover in the final seconds.
