WHAT'S ON TAP
With losses in its last two games, the New Haven women's basketball team looks to get back on track on Wednesday as they open the New Year with a battle of the Chargers as the CACC's Dominican Chargers make their way to West Haven.

SCOUTING NEW HAVEN
Defense wins games! It has been a yearly goal to hold opponents to a low scoring output and this year is no different as the Chargers enter the New Year limiting their opponents to just 58.8 points per game, fifth best in the NE10. On the flip side, New Haven enters Wednesday evening outscoring their opponents by six points per game as they average 64.8 offensively. In addition, New Haven is leading all NE10 teams with their +7.9 rebound margin.  Leading the offensive efforts is graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who is averaging 16.1 points per game, fifth in the NE10, including a career-high 30 points in the season opener against Georgian Court. Her co-captain Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) has both offense and defense on her mind as she is second on the team averaging 14.1 ppg, while one of two players in the NE10 who is averaging a double double as she is pulling down 10.9 rebounds per outing, second best in the NE10. In addition, Deshaies leads all NE10 players with her 67% shooting percentage (63-of-94) with all of her points coming from inside the three-point arc. Rounding out the leading scorers for the Blue and Gold is senior point guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who is averaging 11.3 ppg, while leading the team with 38 assists, with her 4.2 assists per game average second best in the conference. Defensively, it is senior guard Marigona Bacaliu (Worcester, Mass./Putnam Science Academy) who leads the team with 25 steals, while New Haven has 93 on the year and has turned the 171 turnovers they have forced into 173 points, including 25+ in two games, against Bloomfield (29) and Franklin Pierce (28).

SCOUTING DOMINICAN
Currently the top team in the CACC North Division with a 4-1 conference record, Dominican opens 2023 with its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday at Charger Gym. For the season, Dominican is scoring just shy of 70 points per game, while outscoring their opponents by 2.4 ppg. On the rebounding front, Dominican is allowing their opponents to pull down an average of 42.7 rebounds per game, 3.6 more than Dominican. Individually, Dominican is led by Tansaha Mills who is averaging 16.2 points per game, one of three players in double figures. Following her is Alexis Suarez and Chidinma Ndukauba who are averaging 11.4 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. Ndukauba also leads the team with her 6.8 rebounds per game average, while Suarez leads Dominican with 74 assists and 34 steals, with her 74 assists the seventh most in Division II.

SERIES HISTORY vs DOMINICAN

·        New Haven and Dominican meet for the eighth time in the history of the two programs.

·        New Haven holds a 6-1 record in the previous seven games, including winning the last four meetings.

·        New Haven opened up the series with back-to-back wins before Dominican picked up its lone victory 63-59 in November 2012.

LAST TIME THEY MET
Despite trailing at halftime, New Haven outscored Dominican 21-10 in the fourth quarter to post a 10-point win in the cross-conference contest. The Chargers 2022-23 captains Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) and Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) combined to lead New Haven against Dominican with the pair scoring 30 points, 16 from DeBose and 14 from Deshaies. Among the pair, Deshaies shot 7-of-11 from the field, while DeBose finished 6-of-12. As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 46 percent on 23-of-50, including three buckets from beyond the arc. In addition, New Haven added 16-of-19 at the free throw line.

NEXT TIME OUT
After the non-conference battle of the Chargers, New Haven will head on the road for its next two games, starting a series of 10-straight NE10 games. The next two games for New Haven will take the Chargers to Manchester, N.H. with the first a meeting with Saint Anselm on Saturday, January 7 with tip-off set for 1:30 p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
