THE LEAD
It's nice to be back home! Returning to our unbeaten home court as we welcome Saint Rose to West Haven looking for our first home-and-home sweep of the season on Wednesday night.Â
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
In the midst of an 11-game NE10 stretch, New Haven relies heavily on its starting five who are all averaging more than 30 minutes per game, with three of the five averaging in double figures and the five combined providing 86% of the total scoring (1,121-of-1,311 total points). Leading the team individually is senior transfer Ty Perry (Boston, Mass./Brighton) who is averaging 15.4 ppg, sixth best in the NE10. On his heals is graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) at 14.9 and 12.8 ppg, respectively. Rounding out the starting five is Victor Olawoye (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial High School) and Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./) who average 8.8 and 7.8 ppg, respectively. Among the five, Majak leads the team and the NE10 with an impressive 64.6 percent (62-of-96) shooting from the field, while Lane is also among the best in the league at 52.8 percent (104-of-197). Majak is also the NE10's leading shot blocker with 59 stuffed attempts, which also ranks him third nationally in total blocks.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
With just two of their eight total wins in conference play, the Golden Knights are looking to right ship and head into the final month of the regular season starting a new trend. Despite their record, Saint Rose is scoring among the top teams in the NE10, averaging 71.9 points per game, with six different players all averaging double figures in the scoring column. Leading the way individually is sophomore Shane O'Dell and junior Eric Fleming, however the pair has been missing from the Golden Knights lineup since the end of the calendar year. Coming into Wednesday night, junior forward Josh McGettigan is the leading scorer for the Golden Knights. Having started the last eight straight games, McGettigan is averaging 12.0 ppg, with that average increased to 21.6 ppg since he was forced into the starting lineup on December 31.
SERIES HISTORY vs THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
·        New Haven and Saint Rose meet for the 30th time in the history of the two programs.
·        Despite the Chargers win earlier this season, the all-time series remains in favor of the Golden Knights, 17-12
·        The win earlier this year is the third straight for the Chargers as they have now won five of the last six meetings
·        The majority of the series against Saint Rose has come under the leadership of Ted Hotaling, with only the first six games coming prior to his tenure.
EARLIER THIS SEASON VS SAINT ROSE
It may have taken an extra five minutes, but the New Haven men's basketball team picked up its second win in conference play, outscoring the Golden Knights 8-4 in overtime for a 69-65 road victory. Joining him in double figures was graduate guard Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and junior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) with 16 and 15 points, respectively. As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 49.2 percent, connecting on 29-of-59 from the field, with just two of those baskets from outside the three point arc.
