WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) made the three-point line look like the paint as she drained seven three pointers to lead the New Haven women's basketball team with 23 points as the Blue and Gold dropped a double-overtime thriller to the visiting Dominican Chargers 87-84. With the loss, New Haven falls to 6-5 on the season.
Hogan's seven three pointers were the most for a Charger player dating back to at least the 2006-07 season and the first player with five or more since Brie Pergola finished with six on November 17, 2021. Overall, Hogan was one of four players to finish in double figures with graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) following just behind Hogan with 22.
"I am really proud of the team tonight," said head coach Debbie Buff. "We had a couple women down and players stepped up. Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) was phenomenal tonight. We had to go to our bench early and we showed a lot of character and need to build on this moving forward. Cam [Debose] was a great leader. I thought Ro [Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden)] really battled and we had some big shots to send us into overtime. We have to build on this with Saint Anselm right around the corner."
Rounding out the leading scorers was senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) with 14 and senior guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who chipped in a dozen. Deshaies also finished the night with 10 boards for her seventh double double of the season. Following Deshaies in leading the rebounding efforts was Hogan who added to her career-best night with eight boards, while also adding a pair of assists and a pair of steals.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 49.2 percent from the field, making 32-of-65 field goals. Among the 32 buckets were 13 from beyond the three-point arc with Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) adding three and DeBose a pair in addition to Logan's seven.
The Chargers will head on the road for its next two games, starting a series of 10-straight NE10 contests. The next two games for New Haven will take the Chargers to Manchester, N.H. with the first a meeting with Saint Anselm on Saturday, January 7 with tip-off set for 1:30 p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. All of the action will be available live on NE10 NOW.
FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· The Chargers opened up the game with force, scoring the first six points of the game and extending their lead to 8-1 just over three minutes into the action. The 6-0 run for the Blue and Gold all came from a single player as Deshaies scored off the opening and then hit her next two shots to provide the early lead.
· Less than four minutes later Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) would break a more than two-minute drought for both teams with her first bucket of the game, a jumper as the shot clock was winding down that provided the first double digit lead of the night at 13-3.
· New Haven then closed out the quarter with back-to-back three pointers, one each from Stickle and DeBose, to regain the 13 points lead, 19-6, that they took into the first intermission.
SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Dominican opened up the second quarter with a three pointer, but New Haven wasn't going to be outdone as Hogan began her barrage from beyond the arc with her first three pointer off an assist from King just 37 seconds into the period.
· Hogan would go on to hit her next from beyond the arc, barely moving the twine, this time providing a 14-point lead, 22-11. Her second three pointer was the first of three straight New Haven baskets as they opened up an 18-point lead before Dominican stopped the momentum with their first points in more than two minutes.
· Hogan's third three pointer of the game came just under the five minute mark and provided the Chargers largest lead of the game at 19, 36-17.
· That three from Hogan would prove to be the final bucket of the half for the Chargers as Dominican went on to end the half 14-0 run over the final 4:21 to go into the halftime break trailing by just five points, 36-31.
THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Dominican continued that momentum coming out of the break as they would score the first four points in the third quarter to extend their run to 18-0 before New Haven mustered its first basket of the half on a layup from Deshaies more than two minutes into the action.
· Deshaies layup was the first of three-straight baskets for New Haven with King and Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) adding the next two to extend the Chargers lead back to seven, 42-35.
· Dominican proved they weren't going to go down without a fight, taking their first lead of the game with just shy of three minutes remaining in the quarter on a field goal off a New Haven turnover.
· The two teams would end the third quarter trading three pointers with the New Haven bucket the second of the day from DeBose as New Haven took a 49-48 leading into the final quarter in regulation.
FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Dominican came out of that break to open up the fourth quarter scoring with a three pointer.
· From that point neither team would lead by more than three points over the final frame with the lead changing six times.
· With Dominican leading by three in the final two minutes, New Haven would need a bucket at the buzzer to force overtime with Stickle providing the heroics from just inside the midcourt line.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
· Between the two overtime period, the battle of the Chargers included six lead changes and three ties with neither team leading by more than four points.
· New Haven held the largest lead in either OT period with that coming late in the first extra frame when Debose drove through the lane for a layup and a 77-73 lead with 1:08 remaining. That would prove to be the final Charger bucket of the period with Dominican scoring twice more to knot the game at 77 with 17 seconds remaining.
· Dominican would also have an opportunity at a game winner, inbounding with four seconds remaining but the Charger defense forced a turnover with under a second remaining, forcing the second extra period.
· The Chargers would match that four point advantage again in the second OT period with Hogan drilling two more three pointers, back-to-back, to provide an 83-79 margin.
· Dominican responded to that deficit by scoring the next six unanswered, and eight of the next nine points to take an 87-84 lead with 11 seconds remaining.
· Another last second effort from Stickle would rattle off the iron as time expired after 50 minutes of action between the two squads.
