MANCHESTER, N.H. – Senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) put up a season-best 21 points as the New Haven women's basketball dropped a 60-51 decision opening up a two-game road trip with both stops coming in Manchester, N.H. With the loss, New Haven falls to 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Anselm improves to 6-8, 3-7 in the NE10.
Deshaies was one of two players in double figures for the Chargers with point guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) joining her with 11 points. Among the two leading scorers, Deshaies led the way, shooting 9-of-12 from the field, while pulling down seven boards. Leighanna Lister (Kutztown, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), making her second consecutive start, led New Haven with 10 boards, while as a team New Haven finished with a 36-27 rebounding advantage.
For the game, New Haven outshot the Hawks, making 21 field goals in 47 attempts, while Saint Anslem also finished with 21 buckets, there's coming on 54 attempts. The Hawks had four of their field goals come from outside the three point arc, while New Haven was held without a long range bucket, while the Hawks held the advantage in the free throw column going a perfect 14-of-14, while New Haven was 9-of-17.
New Haven will return right back to Manchester, N.H. in three days time when they head back to the granite state to take on Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, January 10. Tipoff from Stan Spirou Field House is set for 5:30 p.m. with all of the action available on NE10 NOW.
FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Saint Anselm would scored first less than 30 seconds into he action and despite going back-and-forth with the Chargers held onto that lead until just inside the six minute mark when the Chargers began a 6-0 rally that resulted in a 12-8 lead at the 5:18 mark.
· Deshaies had the first and third bucket in that run with King adding the middle one.
· Another Deshaies layup at the 3:09 mark regained that four-point lead while the Hawks managed to cut the lead to one with 1:39 remaining.
· New Haven would score the final bucket of the quarter, taking a 17-14 lead into the first break thanks to a second chance jumper from Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) with 14 seconds before the buzzer.
· Deshaies already found herself in double digits for the game scoring 10 first quarter points on 4-of-6 from the field and a 2-for-2 effort at the line.
SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Coming out of that first break neither team could find the bucket for the first two-plus minutes before King went back-to-back with Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) to extend their lead to seven, the largest of the game for the Chargers.
· A Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) hook shot off a Hawks turnovers regained that seven point lead with 5:58 remaining, however the Hawks would respond by holding the Chargers without a bucket for the next 5:55 while scoring nine of their own points to take a 25-23 lead with 23 seconds remaining.
· New Haven wasn't going to go into the halftime break without a fight, scoring the final bucket of the half with DeBose scoring on a layup with three seconds remaining to even the score at 25.
THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· New Haven scored first coming out of the halftime break with King netting the first points on a pair of free throws. The Chargers would go on to regain a four-point advantage, 31-27, but the Hawks responded by scoring six unanswered points to take a 33-31 lead just 43 seconds later.
· The seesaw continued as New Haven answered that Hawks rally with one of their own, scoring eight straight to take a 39-33 lead with Pendleton capping it off with a second chance bucket.
· After Lister also scored on a putback to match that six -point lead, 41-35, the Hawks closed out the quarter with the final four point to trail by just two, 41-39, going into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· Saint Anselm extended that quarter ending rally into the fourth, opening up the period with a three pointer for another lead change. Despite two more ties, the lead change that opened up the fourth would be the final of the game as the Hawks would go on to outscore New Haven 21-10 in the final 10 minutes.
· The closest the Chargers would get down the stretch would be five with 2:38 remaining on a layup from Deshaies, but the Hawks closed out the game at the free throw line to secure the victory.
