Women’s Tennis Secures NE10 Regular Season Champions with Senior Day Sweep Over AIC

West Haven, C.T- The New Haven women's tennis team completed a 7-0 sweep of the Yellowjackets of American International after celebrating three of their seniors, placing them at the top of the Northeast-10 Conference Rankings to end the regular season. The Chargers finished up conference play with a record of 7-1, tying the regular season with Adelphi University and Southern New Hampshire University to split the title of regular season champions. 

Doubles play took three straight matches with scores of 6-0 to secure the doubles point. Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) and Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) taking yet another win on the season at the No. 1 doubles position, their eighth of the season. No. 2 doubles pair Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) and Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) took their sixth win of the season, and No. 3 doubles pair Madi Mabrito (/) and Alexa Orlando (/) grabbed their third.

New Haven completed the sweep in singles play, with three players completing their wins 6-0 against their opponents. Those three players were Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko), Alexa Orlando (/), and Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington). Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) took her match against AIC opponent 6-1, 6-0, while Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) took her matches 6-1, 6-3. Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) in the No. 1 singles spot took her matches 6-4, and 6-1.

Looking to the future,  will play one more match before they move forward into the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament. Their next match will be at their home courts, versus the Eagles of Post University, on Monday, October 16 with a start time of 12:00 p.m. The Chargers will then enter the championship tournament at the No. 3 seed, and take on the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
