West Haven, C.T- After taking home a 5-2 win against the Ravens of Franklin Pierce in only their second game of the season, the Chargers welcomed them back, this time for the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship. New Haven going in as the third seed after their three-way tie with Adelphi University and Southern New Hampshire University for the regular season championship title. New Haven took the match 4-0, against the six seed and will advance to the semifinals later this week.
The Chargers took the doubles point, having three matches played with the doubles pairs that we have seen compete thus far in the season. No. 2 doubles pair Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) and Risako Umekuni (Saitama, Japan/Shumei Eiko) finished off their match 6-2, while No. 3 doubles pair Alexa Orlando (/) and Madi Mabrito (/) finished off their match 6-0. With two of the three matches favoring the Chargers, No.1 doubles went unfinished.
Going into singles play, New Haven with a one-point advantage, they only would need three points to secure the win. Lucia Placidi (Melbourne, Australia/Distance Education Centre Victoria) in the No. 5 singles spot took a two-set win 6-1, 6-1 while Alexa Orlando (/) in the No. 6 singles spot took her match 6-0, 6-0. With one win left for the Chargers to secure the match, Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) won her first match 6-2, and due to opponent retirement, her match would secure the third point.
With this win, the Chargers will now advance to the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Championship where they will head up to New Hampshire to take on the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen. That match is scheduled for Friday, October 20th, with a start time of 3:00 p.m.
