Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Morgan McCarty

Caven Nets Two; Chargers Come Up Short 3-2 to Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y- The New Haven field hockey team took to Adelphi University for their last conference matchup of the season, and one of their last matches of the year. The intense matchup would produce a good game, but Adelphi would come away with the win 3-2. Eliza Caven (Caledon, Ontario/Humberview Secondary) netting two goals to lead New Haven offensively.

Building off the last game versus Saint Michael's, the Chargers made changes to eliminate momentum from Adelphi in the first half. Finding what works for them, New Haven manipulated the ball up the field with primarily long passes through gaps and working it out in the middle, to push up to Adelphi's defensive circle numerous times in the first half.

Both teams, limited to no goals as the first quarter ended, would enter the second half with the same energy. New Haven would grab themselves a corner early in the second quarter, a shot deflected, but another corner would be awarded to the Chargers. On their second try, Kat Trammel (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) at the insert position would insert up to the top to Eliza Caven (Caledon, Ontario/Humberview Secondary), who sent a straight shot off to the close corner. With a slam of the backboard the blue and gold grabbed the first lead of the game, while Caven grabbed her sixth goal of the season. Adelphi would answer with a goal a few minutes later, and finishing off the first half with one more before the buzzer went off for half time.

New Haven would end the first half with a total of 9 shots, four of those finding their way on goal, outshooting Adelphi by three. Eliza Caven (Caledon, Ontario/Humberview Secondary) and Kat Trammel (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) the goal combination duo, would lead the way offensively as they both found three shots in the first half. Cara Lambert (Sutton, Mass./Sutton Memorial) getting her first start in goal of her Chargers career, would grab three saves before the start of the second half.

Entering the second, the Panther's leading by one, the Chargers continued to push the offensive up the field, making the Adelphi back line work to keep their lead. The third quarter would remain scoreless for both teams, with goalkeepers from each end making solid saves to keep the ball out of the goal.

Adelphi would find, what they would have hoped to be an insurance goal in the 52nd minute of play, on a fast break from Lee, finding a cross the body shot to the corner. However, that would be answered seven minutes later, by Eliza Caven (Caledon, Ontario/Humberview Secondary) again with a straight shot on a corner to the backboard.

A one goal game, New Haven turned on the burners, pushing up the field, but Adelphi would control the clock, keeping possession as much as they could within the last three minutes of play. Time would slowly run off the clock, and the game fell in favor of Adelphi.

The Chargers will wrap up the season with a non-conference matchup against West Chester University, for one more home turf game. That matchup is scheduled for Friday, October 27th with a start time of 7:00 p.m. You can catch all the action on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
