GARDEN CITY, New York. – Coming off a big week that saw the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team pick up a pair of wins and have freshmen Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) named rookie of the week by the NE10 Conference, the blue and gold returned to the hardwood getting on the road to Long Island to take on the Panthers of Adelphi University.
In a battle of the top teams in the conference, it was the blue and gold scoring the first two points of the opening set. Just as in the match with Bentley, the Chargers and Panthers battled trading points and trading leads after New Haven found an early lead in the set. Tied late in the set New Haven took a one point lead off Evelyn Kay Girard's (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) ace and forcing Adelphi to call a timeout. Out of the break however it was Adelphi that rallied scoring and forcing a Chargers timeout late. Out of the blue and golds timeout, Adelphi was able to rally two points taking the first set 25-22. In the second set, looking to bounce back, New Haven was forced to play from behind after an early lead by the Panthers. The blue and gold continued to tie the match but Adelphi was able to hold a slim lead. Closing within two late in the set, New Haven forced Adelphi to call a timeout as the momentum was shifting towards the Chargers, but needing only one out of the timeout, Adelphi was able to rally and stop the Charger comeback winning the second set 25-22 and going up 2-0 in the match. In the third set, Adelphi came out hot and once again forced New Haven to play from behind as the panthers grew a lead early. New Haven responded with a 4-0 run as Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) each had a kill and Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) had an ace. New Haven went on another small run late but it was not enough as Adelphi took the third set 25-16 and took the match 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led New Haven with 10 kills as Mast added nine kills. Henwood totaled 27 assists and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) led with 10 digs.
New Haven now returns home looking to bounce back following the loss as their big week continues with their Elm City Rivalry Match up next. New Haven welcomes the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University to Charger Gymnasium on Friday November 3. The Chargers who swept the Owls earlier in the year in a non-conference meeting look for similar result in the conference match. The Elm City Match is scheduled to tip off from Charger Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m on the Charger Sports Network and NE10 Now and all updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
