WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After a dominant start to conference play the University of New Haven Volleyball team returned home to Charger Gymnasium looking to extend their winning streak as they hosted the Eagles of Post University who took the short drive from Waterbury Connecticut.
New Haven opened up the first set with the opening four points of the set, as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) registered her first two kills of the match. The attack continued to stay hot as Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) spread the wealth around and Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) played strong at the net picking up key kills when she had the opportunity. A streak of errors by the by the Eagles saw New Haven extend their lead forcing a timeout by Post. New Haven continued to keep the pressure on Post and got to set point before an error by the Eagles saw New Haven win the first set 25-14. With the win, in the first set, the blue and gold jumped out to opening on a 12-2 run forcing Post to call a timeout. The offense continued to shine with the defense stepping up at the net and coming up with big blocks. The Chargers took the second set 25-13 and were up 2-0 in the match. The third set saw Post strike first and battle with the Chargers going back and forth throughout trading leads forcing late set drama, but it was the Eagles that closed out and took a set from the blue and gold making it a 2-1 series. Looking to avoid a fifth set, the Chargers battled with Post throughout and like the third set, late set drama took over. A late streak by Post closed the gap but New Haven took home the set and match off an error by the Eagles winning 25-23 and winning the match 3-1 and extending their winning streak to four matches. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) led New Haven with 13 kills and 13 digs, as Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) posted a double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs. Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) posted 36 assists and 13 digs.
With the win streak to four matches and a home stand continuing, the Chargers return to Charger Gymnasium when they return to conference action when they host the Yellowjackets of American International College on Tuesday October 10.
