WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Returning home for their final two matches of the season, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team looked to close out the regular season with a pair of conference wins and with some help from Bentley move up to the top seed in the conference. The Chargers hosted setter Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina)s former squad, the Hawks of Saint Anselm.
Before the match, the blue and gold honored Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) for reaching the 1000 career dig milestone and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) who reach the 1000 career dig and 1000 career kill career milestone earlier in the season. New Haven opened up the scoring off an attack error and extended their lead going on a 4-0 run as Brown, Reynolds-Martin and Juergens each had kills. In the drivers seat New Haven controlled the momentum throughout the set scoring as they needed and commanding the lead. The Hawks closed the gap late with a scoring run of their own but the Chargers with a big lead held control and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) closed out the opening set with a kill putting New Haven up in the match 1-0. After the Chargers led most of the first set, the Hawks led most of the second set forcing the Chargers to play from behind through the set. A 3-0 run by New Haven in the middle of the set gave the blue and gold their first lead of the set since leading 1-0 and a late 4-0 run gave the Chargers command in the set as they would close out the set with Brown and Juergens each adding to their kill totals to win the second set 25-21. In the third with the chance to win in straight sets and get the extra rest ahead of their Senior Day match. In the third, New Haven opened up with the first two points, but the Hawks responded scoring a pair of their own. Throughout the set both teams traded points as New Haven was never able to pull away. New Haven grew their lead late and were able to start pulling away and the defense of the Chargers forced mistakes on Saint Anselm late in the set as New Haven took the third set 25-21 and winning the match 3-0. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led with 15 kills. Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) posted a double-double against her former squad with 37 assists and 13 digs as Jessee led defensively with 18 digs.
With a match to go the Chargers welcome the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College in their final regular season match of the season and Senior Night. The Chargers will honor senior Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) ahead of the match as New Haven looks to lock up their seeding ahead of the Conference Champions. The Chargers and Purple Knights tip off on Saturday November 11 at 7:00 p.m. from Charger Gymnasium on the Charger Sport Network and NE10 Now.
