Chargers Roll Past Purple Knights in Quarterfinals 3-0: Await Bentley in Semifinals

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – After beating the Purple Knights on Saturday and being named co-champions of the conference the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team claimed the second overall seed in the tournament and hosted a first round match when they hosted the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College for the second match in three days. 

 

The blue and gold swept the Purple Knights on Saturday night and started where they left off going on the attack. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) put New Haven on the board with her first kill of the evening and tied the match at one all. Both teams traded points going back and forth. The Chargers would take a slim lead before the Purple Knights would tie the set back up continue the back and forth. With Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) serving for the Chargers, New Haven went on a 4-0 run that saw Henwood get within two of 100 aces and add a kill along with Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) and Amihan Johnson (Tacoma, Wash./Fife High School) adding kills in the run to put the Chargers up four and force a timeout by the Purple Knights. Out of the break the Purple Knights brought the pressure closing the gap but New Haven weathered the storm and continued to lead. A late 7-3 run by the Chargers where Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) picked up a pair of kills and led the Chargers to a 25-20 win in the opening set. With the lead and the energy of the crowd growing, New Haven took control of the second set shutting down the runs by the Purple Knights. Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) and Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) combined on the slide for four kills, Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) each had three kills to take the third set in commanding fashion 25-13. With a chance to sweep the Purple Knights for the second time in a row and take the extra rest ahead of the semi finals match on Friday, the Chargers jumped out early as Reynolds-Martin and Juergens put the blue and gold up 2-0. The Purple Knights stayed close early but the blue and gold riding a 6-0 run began to pull away and out of the break held their lead extending their lead into the Purple Knights, second timeout of the third set as the Purple Knights trailed by eight. After the second time out, New Haven closed out the match on a 6-2 run where the Chargers spread the wealth around as Johnson, Brown and Mast each had a kill and secured the Chargers first round win over the Purple Knights with a 25-13 win and won the match 3-0 securing their spot in the semi-finals of the conference tournament. Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) led with 11 kills followed by Kylie Reynolds-Martin (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) with 10 kills. Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) had 34 assists and  Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) had three aces in the victory.

 

The Chargers now advance to the semifinals where they await Bentley for a meeting in the Garden City. After Adelphi's win in their first round game, the road to the NE10 Crown will go through Adelphi as New Haven looks to claim their sixth conference championship. The Chargers will take on the Falcons of Bentley University who they beat in five in their conference meeting during the regular season on Friday, November 7.
