PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Outscoring the Golden Griffins by 14 in the fourth quarter, the Chargers erased as much as a seven point deficit to earn its ninth straight win 56-49 over Chestnut Hill at Sorgenti Arena. With the win, New Haven improves to 15-7 on the season and will make their return to Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday when they take on the No. 18 Assumption Greyhounds in Worcester.
"Chestnut Hill is a very good basketball team," said head coach Debbie Buff. "They went on a run and we responded. We have matured in a big way. This was a total team effort and great team defense on key possessions when we needed stops down the stretch."
Leading the Chargers on the night was graduate guard Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) who was one of a trio that scored in double figures as she finished with 17 points. The Sunshine State native shot 5-of-13 from the field with three baskets from outside the three point arc, while adding 4-of-8 at the free throw line. Joining her in double figures was senior point guard Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) who was one shy with 16 and senior Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who completed her 12th double double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Among all the leading scorers, King led the team shooting 5-of-8 overall, while also going a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line. As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 39.2 percent from the field with five three pointers, four of which came on six attempts in the fourth quarter alone. The Chargers also 11 free throws, which came on 22 attempts. Defensively, New Haven held the Griffins to just 28.6 percent from the field (18-of-63), however eight of those 18 baskets came from outside the three point arc.
FIRST QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· The road team struck first on the night with the Chargers scoring the opening points a little over a minute into the action with Deshaies hitting the jumper off an assist from freshman Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley).
· Two lead changes would follow on the next two possessions with the Griffins first basket from outside the arc and the Charger regaining the lead on its second bucket, this one from Hogan off the pass from DeBose.
· The Chargers would maintain that lead until the four minute mark with another three point providing the third lead change.
· After Chestnut built its lead to four with a minute remaining, the Chargers got the final word of the quarter with back-to-back buckets to end the period, both of which were layups from King, the second of which came at the buzzer.
SECOND QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· King would continue her scoring streak, netting the first points of the second quarter, with the Charger maintaining that lead until the final minute before the halftime intermission.
· The Chargers would build their second quarter lead to as much as six on two occasions, the first on a three-point play from King and the second at the midway point of the period thanks to a layup from Lister.
· Chestnut Hill would go on to end the half on a 16-5 run, including the last nine points of the half unanswered to take a five point lead into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· The Chargers opened up the second half with the first points of the quarter with Hogan scoring the opening bucket on a jumper off the opening possession.
· Another three from the Griffins doubled their lead to six, while they would hit as much as a seven point lead on a pair of occasions, including at the final buzzer.
· The first second point lead came with 6:53 remaining, yet again courtesy of a three pointer for Chestnut Hill.
· The Chargers would manage to cut the lead to as little as three with 2:36 remaining, but the Golden Griffins would score the final four points of the period to take a 38-31 lead into the final intermission.
FOURTH QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
· New Haven would regroup at the break and come on firing with King hitting the first bucket of the period, a second change three pointer followed less than a minute later by a three form Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) that cut the Chestnut Hill lead to as little as one.
· The Griffins would break that momentum with a jumper and would hold onto their lead until the final four minutes when the Chargers began a 14-4 rally that resulted in a seven point lead with under a minute to play.
· Back-to-back three pointers from DeBose 64 seconds apart would turn the tables for good with the first resulting in the final lead change and the second building the Chargers lead out to five with 1:08 to play.
· Defensively, New Haven held Chestnut Hill to just a single basket in the final minute, while going 4-of-6 from the free throw line to secure its ninth straight victory.
