GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In its first game since returning from the Sunshine State, the New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped its first Northeast-10 Conference decision of the season, falling to No. 9/11 Adelphi 9-5 on Wednesday night at Motamed Field.
The Chargers five goals came from three different players as the Blue and Gold opened up the day scoring the first four goals to open up a 4-0 lead before Adelphi went on to score nine of the final 10 tallies of the afternoon.
Leading the Chargers offense was graduate transfer Savannah Ernst (American Fork, Utah/American Fork) and sophomore Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) with each scoring twice. Both of Bailey's goals came in the first quarter, the only scoring of the game in the first 15 minutes, the first of those goals coming courtesy of an assist from Ernst.
Ernst would then score her two goals just 47 seconds apart in the first five minutes of the second quarter to give the Blue and Gold the early 4-0 lead, while holding Adelphi off the board until under five minutes remained before the halftime break.
After seeing the Panthers rattle off nine unanswered goals, including six in the second half alone, the Chargers would net their final goal of the day with 46 seconds remaining with freshman Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) scoring the unassisted tally.
For the game, the Panthers led the way with a 24-13 lead in shots, forcing Chargers keeper Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) to make eight saves, while her counterpart on the opposite end collected five saves. The Panthers also finished with a 21-17 lead in ground balls and won 13 of the 18 draw controls on the day.
New Haven will return to Kathy Zolad Stadium for the second time this season when they welcome the Saint Rose Golden Knights to West Haven for a Saturday afternoon matinee. Opening draw in the Northeast-10 Conference battle is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
