WORCESTER, Mass. – After sweeping the doubles point, the New Haven women's tennis team picked up three singles victories to open up its Spring schedule with a 4-3 win over Division I Holy Cross (Patriot League) on Wednesday afternoon at the Sinnott Family Tennis Center. The win over Holy Cross is the Chargers second against the Division I foe in as many seasons.
A trio of Chargers picked up a pair of wins on the afternoon, including the doubles pair of Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) who earned their first victory of the day in doubles play with a 6-4 decision over their opposition. Banks went on to rebound from a first set loss (2-6) at fourth singles to force the tiebreaker with a 6-2 victory in the second set. She then took the point with a 7-5 win in the third set.
Orlando scored back-to-back set victories at fifth singles to earn a point for the Chargers, taking a 6-2 6-2 decision over Holy Cross' Kallas Courtney. The third Chargers to score two wins on the afternoon was Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) who saw her first victory come at No. 1 doubles with partner Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra), with the pair taking a 6-1 win over the Crusaders top doubles pair.
Ferrarini would go on to pick up a single victory at the No. 1 position, defeating Holy Cross' Ahana Nagarkatti, forcing a third set tiebreaker after dropping the opening set by a 6-2 decision. She would storm back to take the second set 7-5 before earning the point with a 10-1 win in the tiebreaker. The Crusaders three points came at second, fifth and sixth singles.
The Chargers will return to action on Friday afternoon when they host another Division I opponent, the Quinnipiac Bobcats at the New Haven Tennis Courts. Action in West Haven will get underway at 3:00 p.m.
