Tennis Makes Program History with Win Over Wilmington

West Haven, C.T.- Going into their spring season the Chargers were pushing forward with their momentum to break the school record for most wins, this afternoon that record was broken. New Haven clinched the 4-3 win to improve their record to 13-7, the most recorded wins in program history. Not only was history made, but it was made against a team that only suffered one loss throughout the year. Wilmington came to Connecticut with an 18-1 record, placing No. 1 in the region, and was taken down by the Blue and Gold, making it a memorable afternoon for the Chargers.

The Chargers started off the doubles matches their normal pairings, but Wilmington took the doubles point with three wins. Putting the Chargers behind a point, the Blue and Gold went into the singles matches with a comeback effort. New Haven ended up taking three of the singles points, putting the teams at 3-3. Alyssa Rodriguez (Tampa, Fla./HB Plant) took her place at the No. 3 singles winning her match by a pair of 6-2 scores. Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) and Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) both gathered points for the Chargers, one by forfeit and one win by retirement.

With those three points for New Haven, the Chargers went into the No.1 singles match 3-3, the deciding point up to Valentinna Ferrarini (Caxias do Sul, Brazil) and her Wilmington opponent. Ferrarini won the opening set 6-1, before Wilmington forced a third set tie breaker. The third set was tied 6-6 forcing the match to a tiebreaker for the final point. Ferrarini found herself down 4-2 in the tiebreaker and won five straight points to win 7-4 and take the third set 7-6 for the win.
