Chargers Drop Series Finale to Southern, 4-3

West Haven, C.T- The New Haven baseball team came up on the short end of a 4-3 defeat against Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Owls finished off a three-game sweep of the Chargers. Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) leads the way for the Chargers with two hits at three at bats. Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) found himself an RBI, while four other Chargers found themselves a hit on the afternoon.

New Haven got on the board first in the bottom of the first, when Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) would put a hard ground in play forcing an error from the third baseman to score one. The Owls found find the equalizer in the top of the second, on a line drive double, after find two singles earlier in the inning. Advancing on their lead the Owls would find their second run in the top of the third and would score their last two runs in the top of the fourth.

Going into the bottom of the fourth the Chargers looked to find some momentum to minimize Southern's lead. Starting off the inning with a leadoff single from Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) the blue and gold would have their first baserunner. Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) would come up next, forcing a four-pitch walk, before Cole Maucere (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) would lay down a bunt in between home and the pitcher. With speed down the basepath, Maucere forced the pitch to throw the ball away, getting him all the way to third base, scoring two for the Chargers.

The game would then become a pitcher's duel for the last five innings. Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) would come in for the last out of the third and would be a rock on the mound for the Chargers. Carroll would go for 5.1 innings, the southpaw keeping the Owls from getting a hit. With the game on the line, Carroll would force two ground outs, as well as a fly out to first baseman Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) who made a diving catch to keep the score to one.

Randy Ramnarace (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) would get the loss for the Chargers, going 2.2 innings allowing five hits and three runs, with two walks. Liam Carroll (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) would only allow two hits and one run, with one walk and striking out six.

Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) would lead the way for New Haven at the plate, going two for three and scoring one run. Kenneth Franquiz (Bellmore. N.Y./Mepham), Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford), Owen Pincince (North Haven, Conn./North Haven), and Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) would all find themselves a hit on the afternoon.

The Chargers will return to Frank Viera Field on Wednesday, April 19th to start a week-long series against Saint Thomas Aquinas. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
