WORCESTER, Mass. – A trio of saves over a four minute stretch in the midway point of the fourth quarter proved to be the gamechanger for the New Have women's lacrosse team as they rattled off their fifth-straight win 13-11 over No. 21 Assumption on Wednesday night. With the win, New Haven improves to 9-5 overall and 6-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Freshman Marielle Colalillo (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) closed out the third quarter and opened up the fourth with two of her four goals on the night, with those two scores providing a 12-9 led for her team that they would never look back at. Graduate attack Savannah Ernst (American Fork, Utah/American Fork) would provide an insurance goal in the final three minutes to ice the victory for the road squad. Overall, the Chargers outscored Assumption 7-4 in the final 15 minutes.
Ernst led all players on the night with six points, matching the game-best goals with five to her credit. Overall, her five goals came on seven shots she marked on goal and 14 total shot attempts. She also provided one of four assists on the night. Following her in the points column was sophomore Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) who finished with five points on four goals and an assist, while Colalillo matched that four-goal output for second most on the team.
All combined the trio of Ernst, Bailey and Colalillo provided all 13 of the Blue and Gold's scores, while sophomore Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and senior Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) each finished with one assist among the Chargers 17 total points.
As a team, New Haven took 37 total shots, placing 23 of those on goal which forced the Greyhounds keeper to make 10 stops. On the opposite end, junior Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) finished her sixth-straight game with double figure stops, putting up a season-best 15 as she faced 34 total shots from Assumption.
Defensively, the Chargers forced Assumption into 13 turnovers, recording a caused turnover on 10 of those miscues, while on the flipside, New Haven turned the ball over just six times.
New Haven will close out its three-game road trip with its second trip to Manchester, N.H. to take on its fourth ranked opponent in the last five games when they meet the Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday, April 22. Opening draw at Grappone Stadium is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
