Chargers Drop Tough Pair to Le Moyne on the Road

SYRACUSE, New York. – After a strong home stand by the University of New Haven Softball team, the Chargers were back on the road taking on the second set of fins in the week as the team traveled to upstate New York to take on the Dolphins of Le Moyne in an NE10 conference doubleheader after the blue and gold swept the Dolphins from Staten Island on Wednesday afternoon. The doubleheader against Le Moyne marked the first of a three-series road trip for the Chargers all in New York.

New Haven were the first on the board as Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) led things off like she always does getting on base and using her speed to make things happen. After reaching on an error, Chenet stole second before coming around to score as Selena Aponte (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) put a ball in play beating out the throw to first and giving Chenet time to round third and score in the first. Selena Aponte (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) got the start in the circle looking for her third win of the season. Aponte threw three scoreless innings striking out three. In the fourth, however, the Dolphins broke through plating four on five hits in the inning forcing New Haven and head coach Don Justus to make a call to the bullpen bringing in Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur). Griffin recorded the last out of the inning. The blue and gold responded to the Dolphins taking the lead by taking one back in the fifth. Olivia Roberto (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) with one out singled and up the middle and Stephanie Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) pinch-ran for Roberto. Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) drove in Smith later in the inning going back up the middle making it 4-2. Le Moyne however would respond scoring five runs in the inning to take the 9-2 lead after five. In the sixth with the bases loaded with Maeve Lougheed (Audobon, N.J./Audobon), Aaliyah Amidon (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard), and Bella Chenet (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy), Roberto singled up the middle scoring all three on the play making it six to five as Roberto advanced to third. She would come around to score on the very next play, as Skylar Griffin (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) put the ball in play making it a three-run game, 9-6. That however would end the scoring as Le Moyne would end the game taking game one. The Charger's six runs came off nine hits by six different Chargers. Aponte who took the loss threw three and two-thirds of three-run seven-hit softball as Griffin who came in relief threw two and a third innings of five-run nine-hit softball.

Looking to secure the split and stay above .500 in the conference, Justus and the blue and gold looked to graduate student Mia Iodice (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) to deal in the circle. Iodice who shut down the Dolphins in the first two innings kept things close for the Chargers who opened up the scoring in the third. Ashley Veisz (Robbinsville,N.J./Robbinsville) led the inning off with a single and that was the start New Haven needed as Chenet would score Veisz with a one-out single to center. After Chenet stole the second and Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) walked, Olivia Roberto (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) doubled, scoring the pair before coming in off the two-run homerun by Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) making it 5-0. Le Moyne however would answer with 13 runs in the inning taking the lead which they would hold onto. New Haven scored a pair in the fifth but it was not enough as Le Moyne would take the series against the Chargers. Mia Iodice (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) took the loss in the circle throwing two innings of six-run five-hit softball.

The Chargers who need to have a short memory as they remain in New York and travel to the Albany area ahead of their Saturday conference doubleheader against the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose. First pitch between the Chargers and Golden Knights is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from Plumeri Sports Complex.
