WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Eleven different Chargers found the back of the cage on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Kathy Zolad Stadium as the New Haven women's lacrosse team took a 23-8 decision from the visiting American International Yellow Jackets. With the win, New Haven improves to 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
A pair of Chargers led New Haven scoring efforts on the day as graduate transfer Savannah Ernst (American Fork, Utah/American Fork) and sophomore Raegan Bailey (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) each finished with five goals on the afternoon, with Ernst leading the pair adding two assists for seven total points. Bailey also added an assist to finish with six points.
Overall, Ernst and Bailey were part of a trio of Chargers who finished with at least a hat trick against AIC, joined by senior Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) who made her home debut and closed out the contest with three goals, including two that came on free position attempts.
Also among the scoring highlights was sophomore midfielder Shauna Curran (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) who made her season debut and finished with a pair of tallies, with those goals coming on her only two shot attempts. Her classmate Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) also added two goals on the afternoon while she also finished with four ground balls, a pair of caused turnovers an da team-high nine draw controls.
Freshman Marielle Colalillo (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) continued her successful rookie campaign adding three points to her season totals, finishing the game with a goal and two assists. Rounding out the New Haven scoring was Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy), Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier), Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton), Ivanna Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) and Lindsey Belmonte (Yaphank, N.Y./Bellport) who all finished with one goal.
As a team, New Haven finished the game with 45 total shots, 35 of which were marked on goal, forcing the Yellow Jackets keeper to make a dozen saves. On the opposite end, New Haven netminder Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) finished with 10 saves, her fifth game of the season with double figure stops.
The Chargers will continue a three-game homestand with a midweek non-conference tilt under the lights as they welcome the Mercy Mavericks to West Haven on Tuesday, April 11. Opening draw from Kathy Zolad Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
