Litalien Leads Chargers to Opening Win

WATERBURY, Conn. – Kicking off her 13 season at the helm of the Blue and Gold, Laura Duncan and her Chargers took the short road trip to kick off the 2023 season with a matchup against the Eagles of Post University. In their first of two games apart of the Post Season Opening Tournament, Duncan started 10 returners and giving the nod to freshman Lola Wood (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan School) as Caitlyn Daley (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) got the start in net.

 

The Eagles put Daley and the Chargers back line to the test early in the first half getting back to back shots on Daley all leading to a corner that the defense held up and didn't break as the blue and gold turned the Eagles away early. After the initial surge from the Eagles, New Haven put the pressure on the Eagles keeping the ball in Post's half earning four corner kicks and knocking on the door but were never able to capitalize on their opportunities. In the waning minutes of the first half, and following a Post Yellow card New Haven broke through as Macy Litalien (Fitchburg, Mass./Oakmont Regional) finished off Jannayah Bodys' pass to put the Chargers on the board as the freshman earned her first assist of her career as Litalien netted her third career goal of her Chargers career.

 

Coming out of the half New Haven kept their strategy the same that found them a one goal lead. The second half saw New Haven stand up to the high pressure from the Eagles and continued to weather the storm as Daley continued to be an anchor in the back posting four saves against the 15 shots from Post. Daley and the Chargers would post the shut out as Daley finished with seven saves again the 20 shots from Post. Litaliens goal highlighted the Blue and Golds 17 shots with 10 on net earning seven corner kicks in the match.

 

After a day off to recover, the Chargers return to Waterbury and to the pitch to take on the Cougars of Caldwell University on Saturday September 2 with kickoff at 11:00am. All updates, schedules, and post-game recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
