Chargers Open up Conference Play With Sweep of Saint Rose

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Looking to keep their winning ways at home, the University of New Haven Women's Volleyball team returned to the hardwood to open up Northeast10 Conference play as the Chargers hosted the Golden Knights from the College of Saint Rose in their final home game of the current four game stand.

After taking home a weekly award from the NE10, Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) was named Setter of the Week by the NE10 and went back to work spreading the wealth around to the big hitters of the blue and gold. New Haven opened up the first set scoring the first five points of the set taking a commanding lead in the set. Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) had a pair of service aces in the streak as exclamation  the lead for New Haven. With the early lead New Haven was able to keep the momentum going never letting the Golden Knights back into the set. A late run by Saint Rose did put the pressure on New Haven but a service error Saint Rose ended the set with New Haven taking the lead in the match 1-0 with a 25-20 win in the first set. Bouncing back in the second set the Golden Knights took the early lead forcing New Haven to dig deep and mount a comeback and that is exactly what they did. A ten point run by New Haven saw the Chargers storming ahead and never laid off the front foot holding a commanding 12 point lead in the set. New Haven closed out the set scoring four of the final six points with Katherine Rank (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) ending the set with a hammer finish registering her tenth kill of the match winning 25-12. In the third set New Haven looked to win their third match in straight sets of the home stand but the Golden Knights were not going to make it easy. Both teams went back and forth trading points with Saint Rose holding a slight lead through the middle of the set. A four point swing highlighted by a Katherine Rank (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) kill, Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) service ace and Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac). That run by the blue and gold was enough to give New Haven the edge as they would end the set and match with a Macy Brown (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) kill notching her 14 kill of the match and locking up the set 25-21 win in the set and 3-0 in the match. Katherine Rank (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) led all scorers with 16 kills, Michelle Henwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) added 33 assists as Rilee Jessee (Edinburgh, Ind,/Columbus East) had 14 digs in the win.

Going 3-1 on the home stand with their three wins all in straight sets, New Haven continues their NE10 Conference play on the road with a pair of matches up north. New Haven returns to the court on Saturday September 30 when they take on the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University with first tip coming at 1:00pm.
