WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman guard Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) led the Chargers with his second-straight 20+ performance and his fifth of the season as the New Haven men's basketball team dropped a 75-66 decision to the visiting Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday at the Jeffery P. Hazell Athletic Center.
King's 22 points on the day led four players in double figures, including senior Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) coming off the bench for a season-high 10 points which came on 3-of-4 shooting with one three pointer and a perfect 3-of-3 at the free throw line. King's 22 points came on a 9-of-17 effort from the field, also with one three pointer and going 3-of-3 at the free throw line. King also finished with three assists and two steals.
Senior Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) joined in the double figure scoring following King with 16 points, while Ethan Simmon (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) rounded out the leading scorers with 10 points. Thomas' 16 points came a team-high four three point field goals as he closed out the night 6-of-14 overall and 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Simmon finished the afternoon shooting 3-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the field, connecting on 25-of-56 attempts from the field, with six of the 25 buckets from outside the three point arc. The Chargers also finished 10-of-11 from the free throw line for a 90.9 percent effort.
New Haven did close out the game with a 33-31 advantage in the battle of the boards, led by sophomore Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) who pulled down nine rebounds, while all nine players who saw time for the Chargers hauled in at least one rebound.
The Chargers won't be away from West Haven very long as they will head on the road for a single game, a mid-week trip to Rindge, N.H. to take on the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Tuesday night.
