WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Graduate post Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) extended her NE10 lead in double doubles to seven with 14 points and 14 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the New Haven women's basketball team dropped a 53-50 decision to the visiting Saint Anselm Hawks on Saturday afternoon at the Jeffery P. Hazell Athletic Center.
In a back-and-forth battle that featured nine lead changes and five ties, New Haven was led by Deshaies who was one of two players to finish in double figures. For the game, Deshaies finished 5-of-13 from the field while adding 4-of-6 at the free throw line. She also added a pair of steals.
Joining her in leading the Blue and Gold on the afternoon was junior guard Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who finished with 11 points and is now averaging 12.8 points across the last eight games. Against the Hawks, Bassett finished 5-of-12 from the field, one of which was a three pointer, while she also added a pair of assists.
Also among the leading scorers for the Chargers was junior transfer Nayeli Dowding (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) who came off the bench for nine points and sophomore Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) who finished with eight. Hogan's eight points came on a pair of three pointers and a 2-of-2 effort at the free throw line, while she also led the team with four assists.
As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 36.5 percent from the field, connecting on 19-of-52 from the field with four of the 19 field goals from outside the three point arc. The Chargers were also 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
New Haven won't be away from its West Haven campus very long as they will head on the road for a single game, a mid-week trip to Rindge, N.H. to take on the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Tuesday night.
