Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bassett’s First Double Double Leads Women’s Basketball to Road Win at Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Behind the first career double double from junior guard Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), the New Haven women's basketball team snapped a three-game skid with a 66-53 road win at Franklin Pierce on Wednesday night at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse. With the win, New Haven improves to 6-8 overall and 2-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

Overall, Bassett was one of four Chargers to finish in double figures with her 15 points leading all scorers in the game. For the evening, Bassett finished 5-of-11 from the field while adding a 5-of-6 effort at the free throw line. She completed her first ever double double with 10 rebounds while adding three assists and a steal.

"Our game focus consisted of three things; follow the scout, play free and have fun," said head coach Debbie Buff. "We had some great individual performances tonight but most importantly, we had contributions from the whole team."

Following Bassett in the scoring column was graduate post player Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who finished with 14 points on a hot shooting night where she made 6-of-7 field goal attempts and was a perfect 2-of-2 at the free throw line. Rounding out the leading scores was senior point guard Gabrielle Stickle (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and grad transfer Makaela Johnson (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) who each finished with a dozen points. The 12 points from Stickle is a season-high and one shy of her career-high.

Between the pair, Johnson had the best shooting performance, connecting on 4-of-7 overall with three of the four field goals from outside the arc, while adding a team-high five assists. Nine of Stickle's 12 points came at the free throw line. Junior post Bianca Pendleton (Accokeek, Md./New Hope Academy) joined in with the leading scorers as she finished one point shy of double figures with nine.

As a team, New Haven finished the night shooting 46.5 percent overall, connecting on 20-of-43 from the field with the three three-point field goals from Johnson representing all but one of the four total for the team, the fourth coming from Stickle. The Chargers were also 22-of-31 at the free throw line, taking advantage of the 26 fouls called against the Ravens.

Bassett's 10 rebounds also led the team who finished with a commanding 40-29 lead in the battle of the boards. Overall, seven different players pulled down at least one rebound for New Haven with Johnson, Deshaies and Pendleton following Bassett with seven, six and five rebounds, respectively.

Following up this brief one-game road trip, the Chargers will return home to host the Saint Rose Golden Knights on Saturday, January 20th, continuing a streak of three-straight weekends with a home game to close out the month of January. Tip off against the Golden Knights is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. with all of the action available live on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10Now.tv
