WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior guard Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) dropped in a game-high 22 points, his second game with 20+ on the season, to lead the New Haven men's basketball team to a 54-50 home win over the Assumption Greyhounds to close out the month of January. With the win, New Haven improves to 7-13 overall and 4-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Thomas finished the day shooting 67 percent from the field, connecting on 8-of-12 overall, with three of the eight coming from outside the three-point arc, while adding 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Overall, he was one of two players who finished in double figures, joined by freshman point guard Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) who chipped in 11.
Graduate transfer guard Tyler Saint-Furcy (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence Woodmere Academy) followed the duo with nine points while junior transfer Tarese Morse (Springfield, Mass./Springfield) added a half dozen. As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 37.2 percent overall, connecting on 16-of-43 field goal attempts. Among the 16 buckets were five from outside the arc.
Additionally, New Haven finished the night shooting 89.5 percent at the free throw line, connecting on 17-of-19 attempts, including a pair of perfect 4-of-4 performances from King and senior Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches).
The Chargers also won the battle of the boards with a commanding 44-25 advantage. Leading the efforts was Morse who pulled down 11 boards, while all but one of the nine players who saw time against the Greyhounds pulled down at least two rebounds. Following Morse in the rebounding column was Braithwaite with eight and sophomore Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) with seven.
The Chargers will not return back to West Haven for 10 days as they open the month of February with back-to-back road games. First up on the list will be the first of two trips to Manchester, N.H. in the month, this time around visiting the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Saturday, February 3.
