Chargers Outlast Penmen in OT for 76-73 Victory

MANCHESTER, N.H. – After bring iced by the Penmen, Tyler Saint-Furcy (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence Woodmere Academy) converted his second free throw with four seconds remaining as he helped lead the Chargers to a 76-73 overtime victory over the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Saturday afternoon. The win for the Chargers is the second-straight and improves the Blue and Gold to 8-13 overall and 5-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

For the game, New Haven was led by its freshman guard Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) who extended his team-lead in the scoring column with a game-high 26 points as he connected on 10-of-16 field goal attempts with four of the 10 buckets coming from outside the three-point arc. He also added four rebounds and a team-high six assists.

Joining him among the three total players in double figures was Saint-Furcy who finished with 18 and senior guard Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who finished with a perfect dozen. Saint-Furcy and Thomas each attempted 13 buckets in the game with Saint-Furcy connecting on seven and Thomas on five with two of his from beyond the arc. Saint-Furcy also finished 3-of-4 at the free throw line while he was also one assist shy of King with five, while adding to that a pair of steals and a pair of blocks.

Overall, all seven of the Chargers who saw time in the game finished with at least two points, with redshirt freshman Ethan Simmon (Edison, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) and senior Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) following the leading trio with seven each.

As a team, New Haven finished the game shooting 49.2 percent from the field, connecting on 30-of-61 field goal attempts, with nine of those 30 buckets from long range. The Chargers also finished 7-of-9 at the free throw line, while the Penmen saw their success come from outside the arc where 17 of their 24 total field goals came from long range.

New Haven also took a commanding victory in the battle of the boards with a 41-21 advantage, led by sophomore Tarese Morse (Springfield, Mass./Springfield) who pulled down 10 boards, seven of which came on the offensive glass. Hopson followed him with eight rebounds and Saint-Furcy pulled down seven, while all seven players finished with at least two rebounds.

New Haven will remain on the road for one more game before heading back to West Haven, with the next stop coming in Long Island as the Chargers travel to Garden City, N.Y. to take on the Adelphi Panthers on Wednesday, February 7.
