WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Junior guard Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) had the target in site the entire game as she led the New Haven women's basketball team with 17 points as the Chargers dropped a 70-60 decision to the visiting Assumption Greyhounds on Tuesday night at the Jeffery P. Hazell Athletic Center. With the loss, New Haven falls to 6-12 on the season and 2-12 in the Northeast-10.
"I am so very proud of this team for being all in," said head coach Debbie Buff. "Our energy for 40 minutes was fantastic. This team has grown insurmountable from the beginning to now. Assumption is a very good basketball team and we competed with energy and pride."
Bassett's 17 points was her second highest in a single game this season while she has now scored in double figures nine times. Overall, the Glastonbury, Conn. native finished the game shooting 6-of-8 from the field, which included making all but one of her four three-point attempts. Additionally, she was 2-of-2 at the line, pulled down four boards and dished out a pair of assists.
The 17 points from Bassett were part of three Chargers who finished in double figures on the night, with the junior guard joined by graduate transfer Makaela Johnson (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) who finished with 14 and graduate post player Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) who finished with an even 10. Deshaies added to that 10 points with eight rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Overall for the game, New Haven shot 38.9 percent from the field, connecting on 21-of-54 field goal attempts, including nine from long range, which came on 19 attempts. The Chargers best shooting came in the opening quarter when the racked up a 63.6 percent average on 7-of-11 overall and a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
The Chargers will not return back to West Haven for 10 days as they open the month of February with back-to-back road games. First up on the list will be the first of two trips to Manchester, N.H. in the month, this time around visiting the Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Saturday, February 3.
