WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Looking to complete the home-and-away sweep of crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State University, the New Haven men's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout for its second clean sheet against the Owls on the season. With the win, the fourth straight for the Blue and Gold, New Haven improves to 8-3-1 on the season with Tuesday nights victory coming as a non-conference decision.
The Chargers got on the board just about a third of the way into the action when Anthony Denis (Cannes, France/ETP AC Ajaccio) capped off a corner kick opportunity with a header that found the back of the net off the set piece. Kicking off the action on the scoring play was Kaantruk Akgul who provided the cross in from the corner on the restart.
After the Owls turned up the pressure but came up short on a number of opportunities, New Haven struck again late in the 85th minute. Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) collected a pass sent to the top of the 18-yard box from midfield where he quickly passed it to the nearby Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) who used a one-time to the opposite corner of the net to add the insurance goal.
Overall for the game, New Haven held a 10-8 lead in the shot column, putting all but three of those shots on target which forced the Owls keeper to make five stops. On the flip side, Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College) completed his sixth shutout of the season with a pair of saves on the eight total shots from the Owls with the other six not on target.
New Haven will enjoy a weekend off before returning to the pitch as they head to the Granite State in just over a week to face the Saint Anselm Hawks on Wednesday, October 23. Opening kickoff from Melucci Field in Manchester, N.H. is slated for 3:00 p.m. with all of the action available live on NE10 Now on FloCollege.
