MANCHESTER, N.H. – With the regular season nearing its ending point, the University of New Haven men's soccer team looked to add three points to its total in the standings but would settle for just a single point, playing to a 0-0 draw on the road at Saint Anselm on Wednesday afternoon.
Playing on a natural grass surface, the squads split the pace of play rather evenly, however New Haven saw the most opportunities on the day, registering 13 shots to the Hawks six. Of the 13 attempts from the Chargers, four were marked on goal and all four of which were safely corralled by the Hawks David Hood.
Possible the biggest of those saves for Hood came in the final seconds of the game when Mattia Maiello (Novara, Italy/Liceo Carlo Alberto) had a shot at the edge of the eight-yard box with his chip shot attempt barely bunched over the crossbar by Hood. That attempt came with 19 seconds remaining and the Chargers were able to get one more shot in the books off the ensuing corner kick but it was off the mark and time would expire.
Of the six shot attempts from the Hawks, New Haven keeper Archie Watts (Bristol, England/SGS College) was forced to make just two saves on the day as he closed out his second-straight and seventh overall clean sheet of the season.
New Haven will break from Northeast-10 Conference play when they next take the pitch as they head to Staten Island, N.Y. to take on the College of Staten Island Dolphins. Opening kickoff in the intraconference contest is set for 2:00 p.m. at Dolphins Soccer Park.
