Chargers fall to Mavericks in Galica Debut

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y – The road trip continued for the University of New Haven Women's soccer team as they returned to New York to take on the Mavericks of Mercy University for a midweek non-conference match up. With a conference match on the weekend, New Haven adjusted the starting eleven as Jordan Galica (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) made her debut in goal for the Chargers getting the nod from head coach Laura Duncan.

Galica was put to the test early as seven minutes in, Mercy rattled off a pair of shots that Galica and the defense turned away, keeping things scoreless. Galica recorded her first official save in the 13 minute on a shot right at her that posed little danger to the keeper. The backline did their job standing tall and deflecting shots, but a rally of shots forced a corner for Mercy that they were able to connect on as Mercy went up 1-0 in the match. Emily Schmidt (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) found the Chargers' first shot in the 35 minute but pulled the shot wide left of goal. Going into the half, New Haven trailed by a goal but looked to come out of the half. Out of the break it was Mercy that jumped out early, scoring a pair of goals in the second half. Lola Wood (Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan School) and Antonia Henao (Caldas, Colombia/Aspaen Los Cerezos) each got looks on net but missed as the Chargers would fall in the match 4-0. Galica finished with nine saves on 23 shots by Mercy in the match for New Haven.

New Haven completes their road trip and returns home to West Haven and Kathy Zolad Stadium for a conference match which will also be homecoming weekend for New Haven when they host the Yellowjackets of American International College. The Chargers and Yellowjackets kickoff on Saturday, October 5 with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 PM on the Charger Sports Network on FloSports. All updates, schedules, and post-match recaps for the team will be available at Newhavenchargers.com.
