Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Rank and the Chargers Sweep Wildcats on the Road

WILMINGTON, Del. – Coming off their loss to Molloy, the University of New Haven Volleyball team looked to bounce back and get back in the win column as they traveled to Delaware to take on the Wildcats of Wilmington in their final non-conference match before NE10 competition opens up.

After a loss in a fifth set against the Lions of Molloy, New Haven bounced back and set the tone early for the match in the first set where they dominated every aspect of the set. New Haven opened up on a 4-0 run as Peyton Mast (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) each picked up kills. Wilmington picked up their first point, but those came few and far between as it was all New Haven,  Katherine Rank (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) picked up a pair of kills and blocks as all aspects of the set were rolling for the Chargers who went up early 20-6. Five of the final seven points of the set went to New Haven winning on an attack error by the Wildcats to win the opening set 25-8. After New Haven jumped early in the first Wilmington responded in the second set leading late in the set and forcing head coach Ana Pego to use a timeout down 18-16. New Haven at home would come out of breaks strong and they did that against Wilmington, going on a 4-0 run out of the break as Rank and Amber Williams (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) each had kills to force a timeout by the Wildcats. New Haven never gave back the lead and Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) completed the second set with a kill to go up 2-0 in the match winning the second set 25-20. In the third, both teams traded early points going back and forth before Katherine Rank (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) took over picking up a big kill before following that up with a block to extend the lead to four and be the first to 20. Rank picked up another kill and turned the service over to Evelyn Kay Girard (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) who served to match point for New Haven. Wilmington picked up a point but Amber Williams (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood) ended the run there with a commanding kill to end the set, 25-19, and win the match 3-0. Grace Juergens (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) led New Haven with 12 kills as Tori Borton (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) posted a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Payton Malinoski (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) continued to be all over the court with 18 digs as New Haven improved to 7-1 against CACC schools this season.

The Chargers road trip continues for New Haven who now open up NE10 play in a battle for the Elm City as New Haven travels to Pelz Gymnasium to take on cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, October 8 with first tip scheduled for 5:00 PM from Pelz Gymnasium.
