WEST HAVEN, Conn. – With the end of the regular season on the horizon, the New Haven men's soccer team hosted the undefeated top team in the Northeast-10 Conference Southern New Hampshire on Friday night at Kathy Zolad Stadium, taking the Penmen down to the wire in a 2-2 draw.
With the decision, New Haven will enter its final regular season game on Wednesday at Adelphi needing a victory against the Panthers and a Franklin Pierce loss to Bentley to take over the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Wednesday's regular season finale is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.
The Chargers were the first to find the back of the net in Friday night's final home game as Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) found the end of a crossing pass from Adam Lindstrom (Orbero, Sweden/Grillska Gymnasiet) and toed a shot to the near corner. The early goal from Santanach was his team-leading sixth of the season and came just over eight minutes into the action.
The Penmen managed to knot the score at one before the halftime intermission, while the two teams also finished the first half tied with four shots apiece with all but one of the New Haven shots marked on goal. The Penmen's keeper, Preston Neal finished with a pair of first half saves.
Just like in the first half, New Haven scored first in the second frame again thanks in part to an assist from Lindstrom with his pass this time around finding Sandro Branquinho (Covilha, Portugal/Wright State) for the senior's third goal of the season.
On the ropes in the final minutes of the game, Southern New Hampshire managed to earn a late penalty kick that came with just 105 seconds remaining on a foul just inside the 18-yard box. It took a pair of attempts at the penalty, however SNHU evened the score thanks to Philipp Herrmann's shot to the lower left corner.
