Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Three in Double Figures as Chargers Drop Final Game Before Break

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Charlotte Bassett (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) led a trio of New Haven women's basketball players who racked up double figures on the afternoon as the Chargers dropped a 60-53 decision to the visiting Staten Island Dolphins. The loss breaks a streak of five-straight wins for the Blue and Gold and drops New Haven to 9-2 on the season heading into the New Year.

Bassett's 14 points came on 4-of-10 shooting, with three of the four field goals coming from outside the three point arc. She also finished 3-of-4 at the free throw line and pulled down six rebounds. Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) and Lindsay Hogan (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) followed Bassett in the scoring column, with each finishing with an even dozen.

Among all the leading scorers, Hogan led the way, shooting 50 percent for the game on 5-of-10 from the field, with two of her five buckets from outside the arc. Half of Cote's 12 points came at the free throw line where she finished 6-of-6 to go along with a 3-of-12 shooting effort. Both Hogan and Cote finished with four assists, part of 11 total for the team.

New Haven did win the battle of the boards with a 37-31 margin, led by Hogan who finished with seven rebounds, while Cote, Aniya McDonald-Perry (Middletown, Conn./Putnam Science Academy), Schuyler Coles (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) and Nayeli Dowding (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) all followed Hogan and Bassett with five rebounds each.

FIRST QUARTER NOTES

·        In took over three minutes for either team to warm up in a cool Charger Gym, however it was the Chargers who struck first with a putback layup from Bassett.

·        The Dolphins answered right back, scoring their first points on a fastbreak layup off of a New Haven turnover. That basket sparked a 7-0 rally for Staten Island as they open up a five point lead.

·        Coming off the bench, Dowding would put an end to the CSI run with a three pointer, sparking a rally for her team that added up to eight straight. Included in the run was another from outside the arc with Bassett draining her first from long range.

·        At the first break Bassett led the way for the Chargers with five points as she finished 2-of-4 from the field including connecting on her only attempt from outside the arc.

SECOND QUARTER NOTES

·        Staten Island came out of the first break hitting from outside the arc with three from long range in the first four minutes of the period to open up a 21-14 lead at the 6:17 mark, forcing New Haven to call for timeout.

·        Coming out of the Charger timeout Dowding stepped up again with a pull-up to answer the seven point deficit.

·        Bassett would strike again from outside the arc to cut the deficit to four and junior Hogan followed suit on the next possession with a straight-away three pointer to make it a one point game.

·        With the game tied at 25, Coles broke the stalemate as she cut through the paint to the hoop and followed that on the next trip with a pair at the line to make it 27-25.

·        New Haven closed out the quarter on a 17-7 run to take a six point, 31-25, lead into the halftime intermission. Leading the way at the break was Bassett who finished the first 20 minutes with 11 points, securing her seventh game of the season in double figures.

THIRD QUARTER NOTES

·        New Haven would open up the third quarter the same it opened up the game scoring the first points of the second half courtesy of a pullup jumper at the free throw line from Hogan.

·        After closing out the first half perfect from beyond the arc in the first half, Bassett continued that streak into the second half hitting her first attempt from long range extending the lead to nine.

·        Cote followed the Bassett three with a pair at the line as she remained unblemished at the free throw line going 6-of-6, with the latest two extending the New Haven lead to double figures 40-29.

·        Staten Island answered that deficit by rattling off 10 unanswered in just a 2:50 stretch to pull the game back to one.

·        The Dolphins would then close out the quarter with back-to-back reverse layups from Jenalyse Alarcon, the first of which was a three-point play and put the margin at the final intermission at 46-42 in favor of the Dolphins.

FOURTH QUARTER NOTES

·        After trading the first four buckets of the half, New Haven managed to cut the Dolphins lead down to a single point with 2:36 remaining but would manage to get no closer.

·        Staten Island responded with back-to-back buckets from Dana Phelan, the first on a pullup and the second as she followed a missed bucket with a putback to extend the Dolphins lead back to five.

·        Hogan would answer that five point deficit with a three pointer thanks to the assist from Cote, however that would be the final points of the day for the Chargers as they went scoreless for the final 84 seconds of the game.

·        CSI would muster one more hoop and go 3-of-4 at the line in the final 66 seconds to secure the seven point win.
