WEST HAVEN, Conn. – It took an extra five minutes, but the New Haven men's basketball team closed out its regular season scheduled with an 73-68 victory over the visiting Franklin Pierce Ravens. With the win, New Haven closes out the regular season 10-18 overall and 7-15 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
With all regular season games wrapped up for the night, the New Haven men's basketball team closes out the year 10th in the Northeast-10 Conference and will travel to Manchester, N.H. for its first round game in the NE10 Championship to take on the Saint Anselm Hawks. Tip off at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1.
Leading the Chargers on the night was freshman Jah'Likai King (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) who finished with 25 points, his eighth 25+ performance of the season and his 11th straight game in double figures. Overall, King was one of three players in double figures, joined by graduate transfer guard Tyler Saint-Furcy (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence Woodmere Academy) and senior guard Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who finished with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
King closed out his 25-point night shooting 10-of-23 from the field with a pair of three pointers. Thomas saw three of his five field goals come from outside the arc, while Saint-Furcy has all of his six field goals come inside the arc. Saint-Furcy also finished the night 6-of-9 at the free throw line, while Thomas was a perfect 4-of-4.
Possibly the biggest shot of the night came late in the overtime period when Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) beat the shot clock buzzer with a three pointer, his second of the game, as he finished with six points and five rebounds. That three pointer from Braithwaite put the Chargers lead at six with 2:00 minutes remaining.
As a team, New Haven finished the night shooting 41percent from the field, connecting on 25-of-61 from the field with seven of the 25 field goals from outside the three point arc. The Chargers also took advantage at the free throw line, connecting on 16-of-21 from the line, while the Ravens finished with just six points at the line.
The Ravens did close out the night with a 42-38 advantage on the boards with sophomore Joshua Hopson (Jersey City, N.J./MacDuffie School) leading the Chargers with 12 boards. Following Hopson was Saint-Furcy with seven and Thomas with six.
