DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The New Haven women's lacrosse team was held to just three second half goals and despite holding an 11-7 lead dropped its 2024 season opener on the road at Mercy 13-12 on Wednesday afternoon.
Overall, six different Chargers notched at least one of the 12 goals on the afternoon, led by graduate attack Cameryn Antler (Hebron, Conn./Mercy) who finished with a hat trick. One of her three goals came on a free position attempt, while she finished with six shots on goal overall. Antler's free position goal was the only of the day for the Blue and Gold as she had two attempts from the arc and Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) also had one attempt from the arc.
Sparks finished the game with two goals, one of four players to finish with two scores. Joining her with a pair of goals was graduate transfer Katie Schenk (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug), junior Gianna Caprioli (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and sophomore Caitlin Seleny (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton). Schenk added a team-high two assists to her line to lead the way for New Haven with four points.
Sophomore Summer Castiglione (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) joined Schenk with a pair of assists, while senior Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) rounded out the scoring with one goal. Senior Ivanna Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) also finished with an assist as the Chargers finished with five assists among their 12 total goals.
Between the pipes, senior Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) played the full 60 minutes and closed out the full-time with 11 saves.
Next up for the Chargers will be their home opener as New Haven will make its debut at Kathy Zolad Stadium on Saturday, March 2 with a visit from Dominican. Opening draw in the battle of the Chargers is set for 1:00 p.m.
