University of New Haven Varsity Esports recently added a Super Smash Bros Ultimate team that has had a fantastic start to the season.
The SSBU team is playing in two different leagues: East Coast Conference (ECC) and National Associate for Collegiate Esports (NACE).
SSBU had their first match in ECC on Wednesday, January 31th against St. Thomas Aquinas College. ECC utilizes a 3v3 battle format.
The four players who competed were
Alex Fishler () who mains Ike,
Noah Iott () who mains Snake, Brendan Straught who mains Mii Brawler, and
Logan Starr () who mains Ganondorf.
UNH came out the gates strong and won game 1, but the Chargers fell to St. Thomas in game 2. The match came down to the final game and final player, andÂ
Brendan Straut () was able to find an early kill locking the victory for UNH.
SSBU was back in action on Thursday, February 1st against Lebanon Valley College. In NACE, it is a 4v4 crew battle format.Â
Lebanon Valley College is a strong team that has the third best Bowser Jr. in the world. UNH SSBU was feeling the pressure, and they made a lot of substitutions between each crew battle to ensure their success.

LVC barely squeaked out the first game, but the Chargers came back strong in game 2 to bring it to 1-1. UNH won the final game convincingly, as Iott clutched the match for the Chargers.
The UNH SSBU team advances to 2-0 on the season. The Chargers Smash team plays again on February 7th against St. Joseph's - Long Island.
