WINTER HAVEN, Florida. – After splitting their two games on Monday and having a rest day on Tuesday, the University of New Haven Softball team returned to the diamond for their toughest test yet in the early season as they took on Lewis in game one of the day before taking on No. 7 Indianapolis in their second game of the day.
Breanna Kinney (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) got the nod in the circle for the Chargers in game one facing the bats of Lewis looking for her second win of the trip and of the year. Lewis would score four run in the first inning forcing the blue and gold to mount a come back. Lewis would add two more runs in the fifth before New Haven struck in the home half of the fifth. Emily Ricci (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) got the inning started with a pinch hit single to left on a 2-2 count adding New Havens first hit of the game. Meg Anderson (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) stepped into the box and with a full-count drove the pitch into left field scoring Ricci from first on her double. The Chargers would go back to work in the seventh as Brianna Trueman (Trout Run, Pa./Montoursville Area) got the inning started with a single to get the first Charger on the bases. Kylie Thorpe (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) was patient in the box drawing a walk to set up two on and no outs in the inning. The pair would advance on a wild pitch as both were now into scoring position before Rachel Krogman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage) singled to left scoring Trueman and Thorpe making it a 9-3 game. The Chargers comeback would come up short stranding Krogman in the inning as New Haven fell to Lewis 9-3. Kinney threw four innings giving up four runs only one earned on 10 hits as the bats combined for three runs on four hits. The blue and gold looked to bounce back in game two when they took on nationally ranked Indianapolis. Going against a top team in the nation the Chargers were put to the test and Viana McKinley (North Chesterfield, Va./Monacan) got the start in the circle. Indianapolis scored 13 run over the first three innings as McKinley threw two innings giving up eight runs four earned. Marzia Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford) came in relief in the third throwing two innings giving up seven runs, all earned in the circle. In the Halle Frederick (Green Lane, Pa./Quakertown) reached on an error before advancing to second on a walk drawn by Lauren Haversat (Seymour, Conn./Seymoour). The pair would advance a base on a wild pitch before Lucia Ceccarelli (Griswold, Conn./Griswold) walked to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Sarah Smith (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Catholic) drew a walk to bring in the first Charger run. Indianapolis would go on and score two runs in the home fourth as New Haven would drop the game by a score of 15-1. The blue and gold return to the diamond with another pair of morning games as the take on Slippery Rock first before a meeting with Caldwell.
